How Was the Invasion of Normandy a Tragedy as Well as a Triumph for the U.S?

We all know that D-Day, the Invasion of Normandy was a triumph for the U.S. in that it was a turning point in WWII and eventually liberated France and defeated the Germans. However, in what ways was this event a tragedy for the United States?
